The City of Wolfforth Library is excited to announce that they have been selected to be a part of the Family Place Libraries project for 2019. This project is supported and funded through the Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) and the Institute of Museum and Library Science (IMLS). The grant project is part of the yearly competitive grants offered by the TSLAC and will provide funds for two staff members, director Kimberly Brown and assistant director Taylor Acevedo, to attend the three-day Family Place Training Institute at the Middle Country Public Library in Centerreach, New York. Following the training, the library will receive three years of additional follow-up support from the Middle Country Public Library and a grant award of $6,000 to purchase resources and material to develop their own Family Place Library Program in the Library.
Family Place is an initiative that helps public library address early learning with a goal of ensuring that all children enter school ready and able to learn. The Family Place website states that Family Place builds on the knowledge that good health, early learning, parental involvement and supportive communities play a critical role in a young child’s growth and development. The overall goal of Family Place Libraries is to develop a family friendly environment by transforming libraries into community centers for literacy, early childhood development, parent education and engagement, family support and community information. The Family Place Libraries program model was developed in 1996 in New York and has since expanded to include more than 500 sites in 31 states. After three years of programs and training, the library will participate in both state and national evaluations and will be designated as an official Family Place Library. The Wolfforth Library is already a cornerstone of learning for the community and this will further enhance the programs and partnerships so that they can continue providing educational resources and activities for families.
Kim and Taylor will be heading to New York this spring for training to kick off the Family Place program. Get ready for some new amazing programs at the library and Congratulation City of Wolfforth Library staff!
