Tiger Baseball Sweeps Competition at Midland Tournament of Champions

The Frenship baseball team proved at the end of a competitive weekend of baseball that they were deserving of a championship in the Midland Tournament of Champions. The Tigers notched five wins in five games for a perfect weekend of baseball.

Below is a game-by-game look at Frenship’s success on the diamonds in Midland.

FRENSHIP 12, PLAINVIEW 2: FHS put runs on the board in five of their six at-bats and run-ruled Plainview 12-2 after six innings on Thursday. The team collected 13 hits on the day led by Justyce Bocanegra and Dakota Champagne who each had three hits. Riley Robinson added two. Bocanegra started with an RBI double in the first inning and later added an RBI single in the sixth that was followed by an Austin Phillips RBI double. Colton Brown earned the win on the mound. He pitched four innings, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out five.

FRENSHIP 9, EL PASO FRANKLIN 5: After falling behind 4-1 early in the game, Frenship scored three runs in the third inning and three more in the fourth to take control and win 9-5 on Friday. Carson Gordon had the big hit that turned the game in the third inning with a two-run single. Riley Robinson added a three-run triple in the fourth that gave the Tigers the lead for good. Austin Phillips was the winning pitcher. He went three and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs on six hits and striking out seven. Hayden Frick recorded the last ten outs on the mound to earn the save. Gordon, Jacob Gutierrez, Christian Kiser, Robinson, and Caeden Jenkins each had multiple hits in the contest.

FRENSHIP 9, LUBBOCK COOPER 3: The Tigers put up seven runs in the second inning to blow open a close game a cruise to a 9-3 win on Friday. The second frame included a two-run single by Caeden Jenkins, a three-run triple by Mason Weathers, an RBI single by Riley Robinson, and an RBI double by Jacob Gutierrez. FHS totaled 13 hits on the day. Weathers led the way by finishing 3-for-4. Jake Arthus, Dakota Champagne, and Jenkins all had multiple hit games as well. Brock Erculiani got the win, allowing three runs over six innings, striking out 11 and walking one.

FRENSHIP 4, LUBBOCK HIGH 3: The Tigers needed two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win, and Justyce Bocanegra provided the sacrifice fly that scored the winning run in walk off fashion as the Tigers beat Lubbock High 4-3 on Saturday. Riley Robinson earned the win on the mound with two innings of scoreless relief. Evan Johnson was strong in his pitching start, surrendering only three runs on five hits over five innings while striking out four.

FRENSHIP 6, EL PASO MONTWOOD 5: FHS finished off a perfect weekend by scoring three runs in the fifth inning to take the lead and eventually beat Montwood 6-5. Christian Kiser drove in the eventual winning run with an RBI single in the fifth. He was 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the squad in hitting. Ethan Wright was the winning pitcher with two and a third innings of work. He allowed just one run on three hits. Carson Gordon threw two innings in relief to earn the save.

The Tigers are currently winners of nine games in a row and stand at 10-1 overall on the young season. They return to tournament action this Thursday through Saturday in the Lubbock First Bank Classic. Frenship is a host site for the tournament and will play all of their games at the Tiger baseball complex. Their first game is scheduled for Thursday at 1:00 p.m. versus El Paso Coronado.
