Westwind Receives Special Visit from U.S. Navy

DSC_0077Three classes from Westwind’s 3rd grade got a very special visit on Friday, March 27, 2015 from a member of the United States Navy. In December, Westwind Media Specialist Vickie Benson approached Mrs. Rundell with an idea for her classes to write letters to cadets in Navy boot camp. Mrs. Benson’s son Ryan was one of the cadets heading off to Chicago to join the United States Navy. Mrs. Rundell loved the idea and thought this would be a great exercise for her students to practice their letter writing.

Over 60 students from Westwind sat down and wrote to these cadets in training asking about the weather in Chicago around Christmas time, sharing the gifts they hoped to receive and thanking them for their dedication to protecting each one of us. Several of the cadets responded to the student letters, and E2 Airman Apprentice Ryan Benson joined the classes today to share his Frenship roots, boot camp experience, what it takes to join the Navy and to thank the students for lifting their spirits.

“There were four guys that I know of in basic training that never received letters because they didn’t have family,” Benson said. “The letters from the students really meant a lot to these guys.”

On behalf of all of us at Frenship ISD we thank you for your service Airman Apprentice Benson.
