This summer, students at Westwind were challenged to keep reading all summer long through a summer reading competition. One avenue for reading books was myOn, an online source for electronic books. Each student at Frenship has a subscription to this program. Students could either read the books online or download up to twenty books at a time and read them offline.
So what was the challenge? Kindergarten through Second Graders were asked to read 400 minutes or more on myOn while Third through Fifth Graders were asked to read 600 minutes or more on myOn. The student who read the most minutes between June 1 and August 1 would win an Amazon Kindle Fire. Each Kindergarten through Second Grader who read 400 minutes or more and each Third through Fifth Grader who read 600 minutes or more woulg receive an ice cream party and extra recess.
This young reader, Maya Padilla, read nearly 1000 minutes during the contest dates. She read even more when the contest was over. When asked what her favorite book was, she responded, “I like all the LONG ones.”
Five students, Sydney Moore, Emersyn Guillmen, Berrett Street, Brennan Resendiz and Kotton Street read more over the minutes in the challenge and will receive the ice cream party and extra recess.
