Tiger Soccer Battles the State’s Best in Georgetown

The Frenship boys and girls soccer teams had very similar results last weekend in the prestigious Governor’s Cup Elite Tourney in Georgetown. Both Tiger teams tabbed one win, one loss, and one tie in three tournament games.

Playing against the best girls’ teams in the state with many Class 6A state-ranked teams in attendance, the girls opened the tourney Thursday with a 2-1 win against Klein Oak. After a 2-2 draw with Byron Nelson on Friday, the tigers dropped Saturday’s match to Denton Guyer 2-0.

“The girls had a great tourney but had to play without some starters in the final game do to sickness and injury,” said head coach Gery Joy. “Frenship was well represented in the tournament that had many Division I signees and commits.”

The girls return to Georgetown this weekend for another tournament. They open the tourney against Kingwood on Thursday at 6:10 p.m.

For the Tiger boys, FHS started strong with a 2-1 victory against Laredo Alexander. Friday’s match versus Rockwall Heath ended in a 2-2 tie. The team fell 3-0 to Southlake Carroll on Saturday.

“I think if we look at the growth of our program over the past 18 months, to compete in this tournament shows tremendous progress made by our athletes,” said head coach Scott Smith. “The second half of our first game against J.B. Alexander was the best I’ve observed since being at FHS. Once we settled into our groove, we moved the ball around really well. Our patterns of play were crisp, off the ball we looked very organized, and we communicated loud and effectively.

“Overall, it was great experience to bring back as our district play edges closer.”
