Summer Reading at the Wolfforth Library

With summer just around the corner, the City of Wolfforth Library is getting ready to once again launch it’s Summer Ready Contest! From May 26th through July 29th, readers will compete by grade level for trophies, t-shirts and other prizes. The contest is open to kids entering 1st grade through 12th grade! Each  child who participates will receive prizes and is invited to our awards luncheon for pizza followed by swimming and other entertainment on August 4th. The kick-off for summer reading is on Thursday, May 26th from 2pm-4pm and is hosted by Friends of the Library. Don’t forget while you are at the Library to check out the new furniture and shelving in the children’s room.

Also this summer, enjoy Friday Movie Days in June, July and August. Each Friday at 12 noon, the Library will show a sports themed movie rated G or PG. You are encouraged to bring  your lunch or a snack. There will also be concession style snacks and drinks available for purchase for $1. Wednesdays in June and July also feature Preschool Story Hour at 10am.

So why is summer reading important? Kim Brown, City of Wolfforth Librarian says, “Summer reading is important because it prevents the classic problem of summer set back.  Kids are actively using their minds all through the school year, but then summer comes and they don’t pick up another book until school starts again. Teachers end up having to spend the first few weeks of school reteaching the basics. Summer reading is also an opportunity to kids to read anything they want!  No AR levels or test to take! It’s just reading things they want for fun. Reading is a way to go on adventures all over the place to real and imagined worlds and you can do it all from the comfort of home, or your favorite reading place.  Most parents hear the “I’m bored” about a week or two into  summer break. When you hear that, come to the library. We have great air conditioning, great books, computers and new comfy seating areas for littles all the way up to adults.  Summer reading is a chance to continue reading through the summer and develop a true love of reading for fun and relaxation. Every summer we have kids reluctantly sign up because their parents “make them”, but by the end of summer they are begging to come to the library and have developed the joy of reading and made new friends in the process.”

Don’t have a Library card? Anyone who is a legal Texas resident with a Texas ID/ DL can get a library card.  You do not have the be a resident of Wolfforth.  Children 6 years or older, with a parent or guardian who has a Texas ID/ DL can also get a card.
