HMS Students Took a Dive in the “Shark” Tank

DSC_0349Eighth graders at Heritage Middle School recently took a dip in the tank, the Shark Tank that is. Students in Ms. Hood’s Career Investigation Class are wrapping up a unit on entrepreneurship with a project inspired by the ABC hit show Shark Tank. Presentations were held on Tuesday, May 5th, with “guest sharks” sitting in and contemplating capital investments. The HMS Sharks that volunteered their services were Mr. Hearn, Mr. Wagner, Mr. Albright and Mrs. Laughlin.

Some of the required elements of the HMS Version of Shark Tank included:

  • A Business Plan
  • Product Feedback Surveys
  • Sales Pitch with Background Info
  • Capital Requirements
  • Sales Forecasts and Profit Margins
  • Marketing Plans

DSC_0353The student groups created a visual presentation that showcased their product, they had the required documentation elements and then were open to receive any number of questions for the HMS Sharks. Students did a wonderful job negotiating their products and getting the best bang for the buck. Each group walked away with an offer and the Sharks were ruthless in acquiring the student projects.

“This is my first year to do this project,” said Hood. ” “I have had lots of interest in Shark Tank; HMS Version and look forward to improving it each year!”

Great job Ms. Hood and to all of your students amazing efforts; maybe one day we’ll be purchasing their products on local shelves!
