Girls Basketball Looks to Repeat Historic Season This Year

The anticipation and eagerness for the Frenship girls’ basketball program waiting for the 2018-2019 season to tip off has been at new heights this offseason.

Last year’s Tigers turned in the most prolific season in school history with a final record of 30-8 and a trip to the Class 6A regional tournament, the first regional tourney for FHS as a Class 6A program.

And this year, with 11 players returning for another run of success, the Tigers are excited and ready as the season gets started tonight. FHS hosts Abilene Wylie in the season opener at 6:00 p.m. in the Tiger Pit.

“These kids love to play, love to compete and love each other,” said FHS head coach Trent Hilliard. “Depth is going to be a big strength for us. We have 11 players with varsity experience and we will be athletic at every position. Our team attitude is great too.”

Team members Cassandra Awatt, Maci Maddox, Ashton Beeles, Abre Godfrey and Addison Wilson all received first team all-district recognition last season.

Awatt, a senior, set new school records for most steals and rebounds in a season last year. She was also named the Most Valuable Player during the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches All-Star Game last summer.

Maddox, a junior, set the school record for most assists in a game and a season.

The experience coming back plus an addition of new faces make the forecast for Tiger success look promising.

“With so many returners and adding new faces, it will be a challenge to maintain team chemistry,” Hilliard added. “We have to have buy-in from everyone for their role on the team in order for us to have the type of season we are capable of having.”
