FHS Student Named Feature Twirler for ASU

Last Saturday a dream came true for FHS student Ashley Rodriguez when she was named feature twirler for Angelo State University.

“I found myself standing ten yards away from Dr. Alvis, marching director for the ASU Ram Band,” said Rodriguez. “I was planning to attend ASU this fall, but the result of this tryout would determine whether my twirling career would continue into college.”

Rodriguez started twirling at Terra Vista Middle School in 6th grade. With the help and support of friends, family and coaches, Rodriguez enhanced her skills through lots of practice, competitions and at football games. Her dad once told her that watching her twirl at football games got him more excited than the game itself, which is saying a lot for the avid football fan.

“The directors of the Frenship Band, Tom Sorelle, Scott Carter and all the staff have provided me with support and instruction for the last four years,” said Rodriguez. “They have allowed me to be an FHS twirler, and more importantly, a member of one of the best bands in West Texas. I really appreciate all they have done for me and encourage those new Tigers coming up to join the best band in the land.”

“The Frenship Band has a long tradition of twirlers continuing to showcase their talents at the collegiate level,” said Scott Carter FHS Associate Director of Bands. “We are so proud that Ashley will continue to twirl as the ASU Feature Twirler and we can’t wait to see her on the field.”

As Rodriguez began her routine in the tryout, she said she had to push all other thoughts out of her mind. The tryout went by in a blur. Then the director approached her with the news that she’d made it.

“I was in a state of stock. It was really happening. I was going to be an ASU twirler!” Rodriguez said with excitement.

Then Dr. Alvis continued to share that she would be their feature twirler and have the opportunity to go with the ASU band to perform in London at their New Year’s Parade in January.

“God has walked with me on my life’s journey and I know He will continue to be with me as I start this new part of my life,” said Rodriguez. “I look forward to being able to always wear the ‘blue and gold’ – first as a Tiger and soon as a Ram.”

Congratulations Ashley!
