Matthew Noel, a student from Bennett Elementary, won first place, and Emma Lopez, a student from Frenship Middle School, won second place.

FISD-District-Spelling-Bee-09_1On Thursday (Feb. 2), 11 students competed in the 2017 Frenship ISD District Spelling Bee at the Casey Administration Building to see who the top speller in the district was.

Matthew Noel, a student from Bennett Elementary, won first place, and Emma Lopez, a student from Frenship Middle School, won second place.

The winning word: yearling.

Each elementary and middle school campus had one student represented in the district competition. These 11 students all won their campuses’ spelling bee competitions before advancing to district.

From “legitimately,” to “peculiar,” “inconceivable” and more, each student who competed showed great spelling strength with words some adults have never even heard of before.

Audrey Allen, a student from Heritage Middle School, also placed third after competing in a spell off with Lopez for second place.

The students who competed include:

  • Emma Lopez, Frenship Middle School (2nd place)
  • Jon Turner, Terra Vista Middle School
  • Audrey Allen, Heritage Middle School (3rd place)
  • Matthew Noel, Bennett Elementary (1st place)
  • Hadleigh Lorton, Crestview Elementary
  • Shane Anish, North Ridge Elementary
  • Amanda Panes, Westwind Elementary
  • Derrick McCruse, Willow Bend Elementary
  • Ava Hurst, Oak Ridge Elementary
