The “Year of Firsts” Continues: Tiger Wrestlers Qualify for Regional Meet

The “year of firsts” for the Frenship wrestling program will soon be adding another accolade to the list. After competing in their first District 2-6A Wrestling Tournament last weekend, two Tigers athletes qualified for the Region I Tournament later this month.

Gabby Blackwell, a sophomore, and Robbi Furst, a junior, each made it to the finals of their respective weight classes in the girl’s division. Despite falling just short in the championship round and placing second, both ladies became the first-ever regional qualifiers in Frenship High School wrestling history.

Blackwell and Furst will compete at the Region I Wrestling Tournament this weekend in Haltom.

Also, on the girl’s side, senior Vita Munoz took sixth place and junior Jaycie Collins came away with a fifth place.

For the guys, 14 Tiger wrestlers competed in the two-day district tourney, and four landed sixth place finishes: Junior Justin Thompson in the 138-pound class, sophomore Kaiden Womack in the 195-pound class, junior Isaiah Vasquez in the 220-pound class, and senior Jonah Rodriguez in the heavyweight class.

Junior D.J. Garza came within one match from advancing to the Regional Tournament with a fifth place finished and alternate spot at 160 pounds.

The two-day district event featured competitors from 11 different schools.
