FHS Cheer Places Fourth at State Competition

Frenship High School’s varsity cheerleading team placed fourth in the state for the first time out of 64 teams at the UIL Spirit State Championships in Fort Worth.

It was a rewarding weekend for the Frenship High School cheerleading team as they competed in the UIL Spirit State Championships in Fort Worth, placing fourth in the state for the first time ever out of 64 6A schools in Texas.

This is the second year Frenship has competed at the state level, and varsity cheer coach Kayci Smith said their one goal this year was to make it to the finals.

“After placing 25th last year and only five spots away from the finals, this year we had one big goal as a team and that was to make the finals,” Smith said. “When we heard our name called as one of the top 10 schools, the tears poured down our faces!”

The team competed in three categories during the preliminary rounds, including Band Dance, Fight Song and Crowd Leading. During the prelims, Frenship finished fourth in Crowd Leading and 16th overall to make the finals.

During the finals, each school performed all three of the preliminary events in addition to a game situation where an announcer called out a football game situation and the team performed the appropriate cheer.

“After we performed at finals, we all knew we did a great job, and in our hearts left it all on the mat,” Smith said. “Going into finals in 16th place, then placing fourth overall, I could not be prouder! We not only represented Frenship with pride, but also West Texas.”

Being the only school from West Texas to compete, Frenship missed third place by a tenth of a point and missed first by four tenths of a point.

The top five schools included:

  • McAllen Memorial: 88.70
  • Friendswood: 88.60
  • Southlake Carroll: 88.40
  • Frenship: 88.30
  • Wylie: 88.10

“This team is so special and made us so proud,” Smith said. “Their character shined throughout the competition as they genuinely cheered on other teams and was proud for all.”

Congratulations to the Frenship cheerleading team for such a great turnout at the state competition!
