Building on Knowledge, Book by Book

The third grade students at Legacy Elementary are hard at work building 30-story towers! Towers of books, that is. In an effort to meet individual reading goals, students are challenged to read a certain number of books from various categories, giving them the foundation for their structure.

The categories range from award-winning books to informational books, fairy tales, biographies, mysteries and many more. The students are given tasks to complete with each book read. These challenges include completing book reviews, book recommendations, book summaries, and other activities. Once the challenge is complete, the building begins.

Students are given a copy of a blank book spine that they fill in with the title of the book read and the author’s name. These decorated spines are then stacked on top of each other to form their book tower. Each third grader’s goal is to read 30 books and complete their 30-story tower.  For every ten books read, a prize is earned, followed by a grand prize for completing the 30 book challenge.

Third grade student Kendall Flud said, “It helps you with reading because if you read a book and complete the challenge, you feel like you have accomplished something.”

Next time you’re at Legacy, make sure to check-in on the student’s towers and watch how they grow!
